Musée Bonnard
The world’s only museum of Pierre Bonnard, who lived in Le Cannet for a quarter of a century

The story
Before you is the Musée Bonnard in Le Cannet, the only museum in the world devoted entirely to the painter Pierre Bonnard. From the early 1920s Bonnard stayed here for long periods. In February 1926 he bought a modest, chalet-like house called Le Bosquet, “the Grove.” In 1927 he moved in with his wife Marthe. When the Second World War began, Bonnard withdrew to Le Bosquet for good. He painted nearly three hundred works in Le Cannet. Marthe died in 1942, and Bonnard on January 23, 1947. They are buried side by side in the Notre-Dame-des-Anges cemetery. The museum was the town’s idea. It bought the former Hôtel Saint-Vianney, from the early twentieth century, and added a modern wing. The museum opened in the summer of 2011. The painter’s own house is not open to visitors.
