National Struggle Museum
Remembering the 1955–1959 struggle that led to independence

The story
This museum in old Nicosia tells the story of the armed struggle of the Greek Cypriots against British colonial rule from 1955 to 1959. It was led by EOKA, the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters. Its military leader was Georgios Grivas, known as Digenis, and its political leader was Archbishop Makarios the Third. The struggle began on 1 April 1955 and ended with the Zurich and London agreements in February 1959. On 16 August 1960 the Republic of Cyprus was founded. The halls hold documents, photographs, personal belongings of the fighters and other memorabilia. The museum was founded after the struggle by a former EOKA fighter, Christodoulos Papachrysostomou. The present building opened in 2001.
1 April 1955 is the start of the EOKA struggle against British rule; today it is a public holiday, National Anniversary Day. The 1955–1959 struggle led to independence: the Republic of Cyprus was founded on 16 August 1960, and Independence Day is celebrated on 1 October.
