Oroklini Lake
A protected Natura 2000 wetland in the Larnaca district

The story
Oroklini Lake is a small lake by the village of Oroklini, also called Voroklini, northeast of Larnaca. Plants used to salty soil grow along its shores. The water level depends on rain and groundwater. The lake is part of Natura 2000, the Europe-wide network of protected natural areas. According to BirdLife Cyprus, more than 190 bird species have been recorded here, many of them on migration. The black-winged stilt and the spur-winged lapwing nest here. In 2012 to 2014, under the EU LIFE program, the site was fenced, islands for nests were made, water level management was set up, some non-native plants were removed and a hide for birdwatching was built.
Oroklini Lake is in the Larnaca district, not Nicosia. In the question “which habitat is in the Nicosia district”, it is a wrong option. The right answer is the Platania recreation area in the Troodos mountains.
Visiting
Birds are easiest to watch from the hides at the northern and southern ends of the lake. The area is fenced: don’t go past the fence, especially in the nesting season.
