Supreme Court
The top of the judicial branch of the Republic of Cyprus

The story
The highest courts of the Republic of Cyprus sit on Charalambou Mouskou Street in Nicosia. Under the 1960 Constitution there were two of them: the Supreme Constitutional Court and the High Court. Each was headed by a neutral judge from another country. In 1963 and 1964 the presidents of both courts resigned, and Law 33 of 1964 merged the courts into a single Supreme Court. The court held this lawful under the “doctrine of necessity”: otherwise justice in the country would have come to a halt. The first president was the Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Zekia. Since July 1, 2023, there have again been two highest courts. The Supreme Constitutional Court decides constitutional questions and the most important administrative disputes. The Supreme Court is the court of last resort for civil and criminal cases.
The highest court of Cyprus is the Supreme Court (Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο); it can overturn decisions of lower courts. Remember that since July 1, 2023, there have been two highest courts: the Supreme Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court.
