The story

Avakas is a narrow gorge on the Akamas Peninsula, in Paphos District, not far from Agios Georgios near Peyia. Its walls are sheer limestone cliffs. A stream runs along the bottom. A Department of Forests trail, about 1.1 to 1.2 kilometers long, follows the gorge, and on the last stretch it goes right through the water. On the shaded rocks grows the Akamas centaury, Centaurea akamantis, a rare plant found only in Cyprus. The gorge is part of Natura 2000, the European Union’s network of protected natural areas.

Avakas Gorge is in Paphos District (στην επαρχία Πάφου), on the Akamas Peninsula. The wrong options in this question are Larnaca, Limassol and the free part of Famagusta District.

Visiting

The trail is linear: you come back the same way. About 1.1–1.2 km, 30–60 min. It starts by the Agios Georgios–Lara road, about 3 km from Agios Georgios, at the signpost; according to visitcyprus, the first part follows a dirt road closed to private cars. At the end the trail goes through water, so wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Visitcyprus marks the trail as temporarily closed, the Department of Forests website does not; before you go, check with the Paphos forest office: 99640374.
