How the story begins

Sewage runs downhill, whatever the politics. That is why, after 1974, the first thing the two halves of this city agreed on was a sewer. Nicosia's new sewers, begun with a World Bank loan, were to drain to a plant at Mia Milia. In July 1974, a coup and then the Turkish invasion stopped the work. The unfinished plant ended up in the north. Most of the pipes, and the board that ran them, stayed in the south.

The rest is in the app. Peplos plays the full story when you reach the place. You can also listen ahead of time.

Visiting

Eastern old town of Nicosia, inside the Venetian walls, south of the buffer zone. A free walk through public streets. Military positions and the buffer zone are close by: stay out of closed streets and do not photograph soldiers or posts. Church opening hours not confirmed.
