The story

Before you is the old center of Peymeinade. For a long time it was part of the commune of Cabris, the village on the rock above you. Peymeinade became a commune of its own only on June 19, 1868. The first part of the name most likely comes from the Latin word podium, a hill. The Saint-Roch church was inaugurated in 1746; the date is carved on its pediment. It grew out of a small chapel built by the villagers themselves, which is now the sacristy. Saint Roch is the patron saint against plague. The square you are standing on is named after Gervais Court. The feast of Saint Roch was held here in early August. The washhouse on the square was restored and roofed in 1938. The small fountain appeared in 1873, one of the first when water was brought to the village. In the early twentieth century people here grew flowers for the perfumers of Grasse, above all jasmine. The Canal de la Siagne runs through Peymeinade. It was built in the 1860s to bring water to Cannes, and you can walk along it.
