Pointe de l’Aiguille
Needle-like rocks made of solidified lava

The story
About 300 million years ago, volcanoes erupted here. Flows and sprays of lava hardened into a stone called pyromeride, and the needles of the point are made of it. The base of the cliff is tuff, a mix of hardened magma and broken rock. Nearby is one of the park’s four small beaches, in coves with clear water. In the early nineteenth century a couple of Italian fishermen settled in a cave by the north beach, and so the legend of the cave-dwelling fishermen was born.
